CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Izumi Miyamura
AGE: 18
CANON: Horimiya

CANON HISTORY: Here's a very brief rundown!

Even in his earliest appearance in grade school, Miyamura was an outsider. With a quiet and gloomy disposition, he had trouble socializing with others from even a young age, and began thinking of himself in a negative light rather early on. Though his mother said he had friends over as a young child, it can be inferred that those friends either left or naturally grew distant from him as he got older, and from then until his second year of high school, he'd never had a friend over even once.

By the time he entered middle school, Miyamura had become used to being ignored and isolated, content with being bullied by the entirety of his class (aligning with the most classic forms of ijime) and constantly cast aside. What started as simple ostracism and name calling elevated into other students throwing his gym clothes away, bumping into him on purpose to make him drop his books, blaming him for incidents that weren't his fault, and physical violence. He viewed his realm of the world like a small, confined space, one he couldn't leave no matter how hard he tried. Why should he? Nobody would want to be around a gloomy guy like him, someone who was always alone.

Thoughts like "nobody needs me anyway" plagued him on a daily basis, and struggling to feel anything at all in his numbed emotional state, he turned to piercing his own ears with safety pins simply to feel pain he wasn't used to. At that time, he truly felt that he wanted everyone around him to just disappear, and as time went on, his thoughts slowly became more and more self-depreciating. But just when he began to have thoughts like "why don't I just die?", a classmate named Kouichi Shindou practically forced his way into Miyamura's life on what seemed like pure happenstance, and willingly befriended him

Upon entering a different high school from Shindou, Miyamura retreated once more, but wasn't bullied the same way he was in the past. Instead, he simply kept to himself, living his day to day life and not wanting to stand out in school. But by pure happenstance, a series of events led to him becoming close to Kyouko Hori, his beautiful and popular classmate. She and Miyamura both experienced the hidden sides of each other by chance: Hori is actually homely and takes care of her younger brother Souta instead of going out with friends, and Miyamura isn't gloomy, taking off his fake glasses and dressing more stylishly outside of school. They began to take comfort in knowing each other's secret, a side of the other that nobody else knew about, and over time, Miyamura began visiting Hori's house nearly every day until they simply couldn't be without each other.

There's no point in summarizing the whole story, as it's rather long. But because it's so important to his development, I'm going to intertwine a bit of history into his personality section. I'm sorry for the crossover!

CANON PERSONALITY:

To those that don't know him terribly well, Izumi Miyamura is probably best described as an easygoing, slightly scatterbrained, friendly, and reserved high school senior. One to approach things at his own pace, he's wholly kind-hearted and honest, but prefers to not stand out whenever possible.

Fundamentally gentle and a little thickheaded, he's the type to occasionally make blunt remarks or say unabashedly embarrassing things without thinking, even if he doesn't know the person he's talking to that well (such as when he met Ishikawa way back in the beginning of the series, and cheerfully asked "do you have a crush on Hori?"). Even though he can be a little airheaded, even tactless, he always means well. More than that, he's almost too kind, and is willing to help out both strangers and friends alike. After Hori was splashed by a car driving through a puddle in the rain, he began always walking on the street side of the sidewalk, and never lets her walk on the outside even when it isn't raining. He's the type to run after someone and lend them his jacket when it's cold, or try to console a crying child even if he's in a rush to go somewhere.

"You're too nice, and people take advantage of you. So I can't leave you alone."

But Miyamura wasn't always like this. In spite of ultimately being the same at his core, to those who knew him in the past, Miyamura now seems like an entirely different person both inside and out. Before meeting Hori, he hid behind his long hair and glasses, content with being quiet and unpopular in school, as he didn't want to stand out. Others saw him as a gloomy and boring guy, probably rather strange and possibly a nerdy otaku or a bookworm. But he didn't mind being viewed that way – everyone had made assumptions about him as long as he could remember, and in his mind, they weren't entirely wrong.

From the time he was in grade school all the way up through his second year of high school, the best word to describe Miyamura would be "gloomy". Even as a child, he didn't have any friends and was looked down upon by his peers for being quiet and solitary. In one of his early memories, he recalls being the only student left without a partner for group work, since none of the other children wanted him in their group. At such a young age, the other kids had no reservations about telling him how depressing and weird he was to be around, and being so impressionable at the time, he grew up wallowing in self-loathing as the bullying in his life became worse and worse.

"Come to think of it, there was nothing I liked. Not a single thing. I wished everyone would disappear. I thought it all the time."

That is, until Shindou, energetic and popular, quickly sparked a friendship with Miyamura and gradually brought him out of the metaphorical shell in which he'd withdrawn. To someone who had never had a true friend in any sense of the word, meeting Shindou completely changed the way Miyamura approached every day – for the first time in his life, he had someone who accepted him despite his gloominess and voluntarily stayed by his side regardless of what other people would think. Little by little, due to his friendship with Shindou, Miyamura began to realize that he may not be the horrible person he'd always thought he was. In his own words, Shindou singlehandedly saved him, and taught him that there were people out there willing to give him a chance.

Truly, though, it's through meeting Hori that Miyamura really began to change. He still finds it hard to believe that someone like her cares so deeply and genuinely for both the good and bad parts of him, and that she's all of the things he never thought he'd have: someone who will laugh, cry, get sad, and be mad all for his sake. Before he knew it, she became his main pillar of support, and even his classmates realized that he was changing before he cut his hair and started being more social. Hori took a gloomy boy like him by the hand and gave him a place to belong, showing him both subtly and overtly that he's just as worthy of love as anyone else.

"It might be really hard, but I don't think there's anyone in the world you can't be friends with. If not now, then someday...."

It's also important to note the ways in which Miyamura has grown from his hardships. When the topic of his middle school yearbook came up, Miyamura thought back to all of the traumatic experiences that made him hate himself and become a self-depreciating person. But even though he used to want those times to disappear, he tells Hori that his past is now important to him, and he can't bring himself to throw those yearbooks away. He's changing now, and for the better. And through meeting Shindou and having Hori pull away the curtains he tried to hide behind for so long, his world has brightened considerably. Facing each new day isn't quite as scary as he thought.... Not when he has the love and support of his friends to make him smile even on cloudy days.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
As an ordinary Japanese high school boy, Miyamura doesn't have any supernatural powers or abilities. On top of that, he doesn't seem to have any talents or skills that particularly stand out (unless being good at tongue twisters counts). However, since his parents run a bakery/cake shop, he's quite good at making cakes and other sweets.

As far as academics go, his grades are a fair bit below average in every category outside of health and P.E., which he considers "basic." Although his default walking speed is somewhat brisk, he has poor stamina since he prefers to stay inside, and is likewise below average in sports. However, he enjoys swimming and otherwise being in the water, even if he can't actually swim (and will go to nearly any length to get out of swimming classes at school, as it would mean revealing his tattoos).

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Izumi Miyamura (with different kanji, though it isn't terribly important: 宮村泉 rather than 宮村伊澄.)
AU AGE: 16
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: While his black hair and blue eyes will remain the same, there are a few other small differences to note!

-Izumi originally wore fake glasses in canon to detract attention from himself. In this AU, he's quite nearsighted (-7.0 or so in both eyes), and usually wears contacts outside of school to supplement his use of glasses. Without wearing one or the other, he can't see much of anything.
-He has a number of tattoos on his left side in canon that won't be present in this AU.
-His canon self has four piercings in each ear, and small scars where his lip and tongue piercings used to be. In this AU, Izumi will have six piercings: three in each ear.
-At the end of chapter 26, Izumi cut his hair short. However, this version of Izumi will still have his long hair, which falls around his shoulders.

AU HISTORY:
-Born to Japanese immigrants and raised in Recollé as an only child. One of his cousins is Hinata Aoi, who he became close to when the Aoi family moved to Recollé ten years prior.
-His parents run an art supply store, and due to growing up around art, he quickly developed a passion for it from a young age.
-He grew up as a quiet yet happy child until he began to be outcast in the early years of grade school. The bullying became much worse in middle school, and after being bullied for being gloomy and weird (by Kamui Brusby, among others), he experienced a great deal of self-loathing in turn.
-As in canon, he gave himself piercings with a safety pin as a form of self-harm.
-Yearning to find somewhere to belong, he retreated into an online space where he wouldn't have to talk to people one on one, and met people with similar interests that liked him for who he is.
-All the same, he felt like those people wouldn't accept him if they met him in person, and pushed them away out of fear.
-Around the same time, a classmate named Mao Yata befriended him in spite of everything, and almost singlehandedly got Izumi back up on his feet though middle school and into high school.
-Even now, as a high school junior, he isn't terribly social and usually keeps to himself outside of the art club, but he has a small number of friends that he treasures! People are starting to catch on to the fact that he isn't as antisocial as he seems, but he still wants to go under the radar.
-He's a member of artist circles and groups online – he goes by a pen name and has several online friends (some live in Recollé, and he's met and/or knows a few in person) and a modest number of followers on social media.
-Works part-time in his family's art shop with Yusuke, among others. Because he wears contacts and pulls his hair back outside of school, revealing his many ear piercings, nobody from school recognizes him (to his knowledge). A number of customers come in solely to talk to him.

*All of relationships were approved by the players of the characters in question!

AU PERSONALITY:

-His personality is actually quite in line with the way it is in canon, but there are naturally a few changes due to growing up in a different country with a different background.
-Due to growing up in America, his bullying was more confrontational, rather than the typical Japanese model of being excluded by an entire class and whispered about. In addition to being ostracized, he was bullied verbally (and physically), but the number of people actually targeting him was smaller.
-He's actually rather open online, especially since he works under a persona, but is still more reserved in school outside of the art club.
-Though meeting Mao and later people like Yusuke made him open up a fair bit, he's never had someone quite like Hori in his life, and is therefore slightly more similar to the way he was earlier in canon. Additionally, although Mao saved him in a way similar to Shindou in canon, Izumi is inseparable from Mao even now. He's also very close to his family, and spends a great deal of time with Hinata and his other cousins.
-Most classmates see him as being weird and gloomy even now, and assume he's a nerd, gamer, bookworm, computer geek, etc. In truth, he knows laughably little about the technical side of computers, falls asleep reading books, plays only an average amount of video games, has never gotten overly deep into anime or manga, and doesn't collect figures or geek out over any particular movies or series. ....He's totally an art nerd, though.
-Because he looks smart, people often ask him for his notes in class, but he always declines – they're usually highly jumbled and filled with more doodles than words. He isn't a great student overall, and is especially dreadful in math. His only high scores are in classes that involve creativity, like art or home-ec. His stamina sucks and he wilts in the sun, so he hates anything involving athletics.
-He keeps his hobby a secret in school outside of attending art club. The more he flies under the radar, the better. He has a more traditional style and likes drawing, painting, watercolours, charcoal, pastels, photography, etc. However, he does own a tablet, and takes commissions online. Much like Yusuke, due to the material that's popular online, he's started drawing game and anime art to make a profit.
