[She pushes the vanilla latte over to him which suits her just fine. She likes both equally and she doesn't look put out either way. There's a giggle because yeah, she gets it, it's nice to have other people do things for you that way but she'd do anything for her cousin in the first place.]
Things have been okay, I guess! A little busy but it's not bad. I think having the app's made things a little harder, but at the same time it's a little nice. What about you? Getting used to being on the mainland again?
[Naturally, he's quick to take a sip, and the delight that seeps into his expression is difficult to miss. Lattes are a gift from the heavens, honestly.]
That's good to hear! Retrospec can make daily life pretty complicated sometimes, but you seem like you've really gotten used to everything while I was away! Besides, it can't be so bad if most of my family and friends are on it.
[He leans forward just a little, putting an elbow on the table and propping up his chin with one hand.]
It was fun to get away for a little while, but it lasted so long that I'm really glad to be back home. ....And catching up on schoolwork was a pain, so I hope I'm not whisked off to sea again anytime soon.

[It's been radio silence for months. Ever since connections started to fizzle out to the outside world, when Chiaki's I love yous would be drowned in static, there hasn't been a word from him. It's been so, so much quieter.
Until the second that Izumi's phone lights up - ]
IZUMI I'M HOME WHERE ARE YOU I'M GOING TO FIND YOU
[As if there's even a slight chance that Izumi won't be able to spot his cousin RUNNING AT FULL SPEED toward him, because he already knows that's exactly what will happen.]
If you need help with catch-up let me know! You're taking a lot of the same classes I took last year so it should be a piece of cake. [But she's not quite as enthusiastic about Retrospec when it comes up, frowning just slightly around her latte.] Hinata and I want to go soon, too.
[...] A lot of my friends are on the app and everything which is great, but there are some strangers that kind of know me on the same app. That's the part that's a little weird.
[ - as soon as he sees his beloved cousin. He's going to run and run and run, arms wides open, and probably will not stop, he plans to just pick up Izumi as he runs and then will probably spin him? That's the only thing that Chiaki can think to do with all this energy he has.]
[ Mao didn't have a ton of time to figure out how to one up Izumi's birthday surprise and he's not entirely sure this one will work, but he's gotta at least try, right? So he follows the pattern Izumi set, casually texting with him right up until the last moment...
When a N*rf suction dart thocks against Izumi's window. There are shiny streamers attached to it, colorful foil printed with Happy Birthday! and little balloons. Surprise? ]
[Listen. It might sound conceited, but after knowing Mao for so many years and always doing the same on his birthday a month earlier, Izumi knows that something is going to happen at midnight. Maybe it'll just be a stream of congratulations through text and he'll be surprised somehow at school tomorrow, but given his party popper escapade last month....
The sudden loud noise should be expected, but Izumi still jumps in shock before tossing his phone on his bed and running over to his window with a broad smile. Balloons and streamers! But he only has a moment to look at it before he leans out of his window and grins down to Mao. Really, who else would it be?]
Thanks! It's really not fair that Mao was able to pick up on everything so quickly.... [S I G H S] You guys are really good students, and I'm definitely not.
[For a moment, he's a little worried that he shouldn't have brought it up in such a casual manner, and furrows a brow as Rise continues.]
Mmmm.... So you share memories with people too. It hasn't happened to me, but it's got to be really weird to have people remember you when you don't know them. [He leans forward into his hand, idly swirling the straw in his cup with the other.] Have you tried talking to Hinata? He and Mao and some other people I know have memories from the same place, so they might know that feeling.
[ Yeah sorry, no way was Mao going to let Izumi get a good night's sleep if he was going to be denied one too. Turnabout is fair play, after all! But more importantly, he can't risk anybody else getting the chance to be the first one to say happy birthday in person. It's less about competition and more about making sure Izumi knows Mao cares just as much as he does.
But, well. It's also a little bit about competition. He strikes a pose with his N*rf gun when Izumi opens the window, grinning. ]
How is this one upping? Mine didn't even explode. ... Happy birthday!!
Mao seems pretty smart but I don't think it's always about brains. If you work hard you can pick things up just as fast, I bet.
[She's pouting though.] Hinata and I kind of talked about it before I found out people knew me and he's taking the whole thing way too well. He told me about a lot of the people he remembers but you know Hinata. Not a lot bothers him. He and Tsukasa are from the same place, too. I know that much.
It's just...I don't know! Some of these are friends I've known for a little while like Yukiko but there are other people like Yu and Yosuke who I just met and they're so...[A vague gestures with her coffee, some of it threatening to spill out of the top.] Cool. It makes you wonder how people know each other, I guess.
[HONESTLY, this has happened enough times in the past that Izumi's come to expect it, not to mention that he's far too excited to see Chiaki to run or.... do anything but flinch and open his arms to hug his cousin back.
And nearly get completely knocked over in the process. That's fine too.]
Aniki! It's been forever! What are you even doing here?!
Yeah, but you figured out a way to get the streamers up to me instead of just letting them fall lamely in the grass!
[Ahhh, they're less than a minute into his birthday and he's already smiling so much that his face hurts. Slight competition or not, not many friends would run across their neighbourhood at midnight (on a school night, at that) to do this.]
Thanks, Mao! Now we're finally the same age again! [Izumi leans a little further out of his windowsill, still laughing.] If this wasn't the second floor, I'd jump out of my window and hug you! Or grab my own N*rf gun and one-up you for real!
It wasn't lame! Yours made way more noise so it was more like a celebration than mine.
[ Mao's grinning too, perfectly happy to undermine his own efforts in an attempt to raise Izumi's back up. It's Izumi's birthday, after all! ]
Yeah, don't start your birthday out with a busted ankle, you can get me at school in a few hours. Just not with a gun or we're both gonna get in trouble... but if you wanted to shoot at me now, there's no way you'd hit me. It's too dark, right?
[ He's not trying to goad Izumi into a N*rf fight, no, of course not. No. ]
[....Well, he was going to respond to that part about school, but there's something much more important at hand, and it involves smirking from his window.]
Wait, what? A challenge to a N*rf fight when I clearly have all kinds of advantages like being able to dodge while you're stuck in a little window? No way, I'd never do that.
[ Followed by an attempt aaaand yes, a success at spinning the orange and grey gun on his finger, ending with it back in firing position. ]
That'd be as unfair as threatening to use your older cousin to buy you fireworks, right?
[ PEW! It goes wild, bouncing off the wall of Izumi's house, but even so, game on! ]
